5 Reasons Your Business Needs a Newsletter

90% of email gets delivered to the intended recipient’s inbox,
whereas only 2% of your Facebook fans see your posts in their News Feed.

– Forrester Research

Email newsletter marketing is an inexpensive and effective way to keep in touch with your customers and prospects. Do you have a blog? A Facebook Page? Do you post on Twitter and Instagram? Most of your customers won’t see everything you post. A newsletter can handle that and make sure your customers are updated on what’s important.

1. Keep Your Customers Updated
A  newsletter is the easiest way to keep your customers updated on the most important things you want them to know. Newsletters are affordable and are not time-consuming. There are many free or low-cost email marketing software tools to help you create, send and monitor your mailings. Do you have a list of your customer’s names and email addresses? That’s the 1st step to creating your mailing list: sending emails to your current customers. Its easier to re-sell to a satisfied customer than to convert a new customer.

2. Send Special Offers and Promotions
Offer your subscribers an exclusive promotion that is not available anywhere else to demonstrate your appreciation for their support. Make it easy for them to use your offer: don’t require them to print it out or

3. Be Useful
Your product or services solve a problem or need for your customers. Reinforce their view of you as a go-to resource and use your newsletter to share valuable information in your area of expertise.

4. Keep Your Business Top of Mind
Don’t let your customers forget about you! A newsletter delivered straight to their inbox – with a strategic subject line and preview – reminds them of your product and how you can help them.

5. Be Timely
Some business newsletters are applicable to all your customers at the same time, others are unique to each customer. If you have a business that appeals during the holidays or summer vacations you may have one newsletter to all customers. If your service is related to a specific date such as a birthday. annual visit, or a specific location such as a city your newsletter can go out to your customers who meet that criteria.

Email Marketing Fact:
For every $1 spent on email marketing, the average return is $44.25.

How to Optimize Your Facebook to Twitter Auto-Posts

As a social media consultant, many of my clients are looking for tips and tricks to simplify and save time managing their own social media. I can make recommendations to manage their social media such as:

  • Use a social media scheduling tool like HootSuite – many are free for small businesses with only have a few social media accounts.
  • Use a WordPress plugin to automatically promote your blog Titles and URLs on your social media channels.
  • Link your Email Service Provider to your social media accounts to automatically share your newsletters to your social media accounts.

Recently a client said they have linked their Facebook page and Twitter accounts to auto-publish their posts to Twitter. Typically their FB post is a short intro and their recent blog post URL, or a short message and a link to an article they think their followers will be interested in. Currently, when they post on Facebook it displays on Twitter as about 100 characters with a link to Facebook that looks like:

NEW! Edit Your LinkedIn Updates

NEW! Edit Your LinkedIn Updates

I’m thrilled to see all the changes LinkedIn has been introducing, most make it easier to use and manage your LinkedIn account. One update announcement I missed and just noticed on my LinkedIn account is the ability to edit and change your LinkedIn updates. Previously if you found an error in your post, you had to just let it go, or delete the update entirely and repost it. With this new feature, LinkedIn joins Facebook, Instagram and other social media platforms that let you edit your posts. (Will Twitter let us edit tweets anytime soon?)

5 Keys to Creating a Content Strategy for Your Startup

I recently was a guest blogger on AGaenzele Integrated Marketing Blog:

Content marketing is a cost-effective strategy for startups to gain visibility, build their reputation and increase brand awareness. Most startups are working on limited budgets but are strong on ingenuity, passion and enthusiasm. Content marketing is more than an industry buzz word: it’s a highly creative way to drive targeted traffic to your website and increase your online visibility to people and search engines.

What is a content strategy?
Your content strategy is a plan for delivering new content and promoting that content to your target audience. The more specific and detailed your content strategy is, the easier it will be to actually deliver that content as planned. It can be easy to ‘wing it’ when you’re starting out and full of fresh ideas and enthusiasm. A content strategy is critical when you’re deep in the trenches of building your business and getting new marketing content out is another task on your long to-do list.

Your content strategy should include info about the following:

6 free tools for content writers

6 Free Tools for Content Writers

‘Content Writer’ is an elusive job title, because as a content writer I perform many digital marketing activities for my clients. In addition to designing content strategy and writing website copy, blogs, articles, white papers and press releases, I also:

  • craft social media profiles and write and post to social media accounts
  • manage and update website content
  • create content and social media calendars
  • design SEO and keyword strategies
  • source and design graphics to support content
  • create social media ads

In short, I have my finger in just about everything digital for my clients, not just writing. I rely on tools to make my work more effective and efficient. The tools I use are either free or freemium. For most, when I started my content writing business I used the free version. As my client list grew and my workload grew, I’ve upgraded to the paid version for most of these tools.
